Golf had been played in Scotland for many centuries by the time it reached the United States of America. Historians argue that it was first played in Charleston in South Carolina in the mid-1700s. What is certain is that after John Reid gathered a few friends for a game in a Yonkers cow pasture in the 1890s, the game is now dominated by our American cousins.
